The narrative in the majority of this type of music videos break up the narrative to convey the artists' performance which can be seen as more entertaining because it gives the audience variety of different perspectives to look at the video.
Usher, Alicia Keys - My Boo
The iconography is mainly very sexual due to the mis-en-scene as it uses revealing clothes, locations and use of dark lighting. Moreover, the lyrics are normally very sexist which are enhanced by the dance scenes usually represented by feminine figures. It focuses on the artist's talents, giving a positive representation of them as the songs tend to be very catchy and subsequently make the audience love the song and the artist even more.
Kelis Featuring Too $hort - Bossy
The use of the camera is not very important as it only uses low angled shots (in order to make the artist seem bigger, stringer and more important which emphasises on their success as artists), and close up shots of the artists on sexual scenes (which make the video much more intimate and personal . It also uses tracking shots of the artists dancing or lip-syncing across the street.
Beyoncé - Irreplaceable
The mise-èn-scene is key in this genre as it will set the mood. For example, the props are used to show richness as there are many expensive objects on the frame (product placement) such as cars, jewellery, watches, chains… The clothing is also very important as it tends to be very sexual and enhances the male gaze that is present all though out the video. Females tend to wear tight and short dresses, bikinis, high heels and bold makeup al of them to attract the male audience which is normally the target audience and to make the artists look perfect. Male characters tend to be shirtless or they may wear very tight fitted shirts along with many chains in order to show off their masculinity. The lighting is never natural and tends to use artificial lights which are usually dark or coloured. They use a high key lighting on artists and on the characters of the narrative in order to give them the importance needed.
Bow Wow - Shortie Like Mine (Video) ft. Chris Brown, Johntá Austin
It is edited a lot due to the use of green screens, colour filters (tend to be bright colours such as blue, purple or pink which are placed on top of shots) to give an urban look.
